Joey Chestnut proved to be the next great hope for America, to take back the Hot Dog Eating Record from Japan’s Takeru Kobayashi, by coming in second place at last year’s Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest. He came close to topping Takeru’s record of 53 3/4 HDB’s (hot dogs and buns) with his personal (and American) best of 52.

Things have changed. On Saturday June 2nd, in a shopping mall in Arizona, at a qualifying contest for the 2007 Nathan’s Famous, Joey set a new World Record of 59 1/2 hot dogs:

If Joey can keep up the pace, it appears as though the Mustard Belt will be around a new waist this year.
